The Bowie rumour at the BDO is still alive!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/entertianment/bdo/2009/09/29/1253989901891.html

..and any excuse to post this picture again. It's a great story that Michael posted on the blog after I posted this picture.

How the Bowie photo came about–My brother, Ron, was Director of Publicity for Mercury Records. They were having trouble breaking David Bowie in the U.S. Ron arranged for Bowie to do a promo/press tour. The flight from London arrived at Dulles Airport outside of D.C. I was a music columns for the Washington Star/ I had written about David in 1968 based on his success in the UK. So…his first stop was DC/Maryland and my parents picked up Bowie and my brother at the airport. Ron had flown in from Chicago (where Mercury was headquartered at the time).

DIY into space!

These two MIT students got a cheap camera, a styrofoam beer cooler and a balloon, launched it into the upper atmosphere. The camera took pics every 5 minutes.

Matthew Sweet: legofriend

I spend a lot of time using Flickr and this Lego character gag is wearing me a bit thin... but as a big fan of this album, Girlfriend by Matthew Sweet, I did actually laugh.

Learning to ride a bike: no more training wheels for the kids

This is a very cool invention. Training wheels are my bugbear. Toby won't ride if he didn't have them and refuses to take them off before his is 5 (some kind of kid mandatory age thing he got into his head).

Training wheels are good because kids can get going on a bike but bad, as the woman in this video says, for teaching bad - and lazy - habits.

This invention is a high stability front wheel that has a battery powered rotor in it that spins against the wheel's balance to hold it upright. Eventually it will fall.

NYC’s cycletrack on steroids

Portland, OR leads the US when it comes to most things cycling and city related but bikeportland.org reports on NYC new bikeways. Totally protected in the middle of major roads. As the post says "they are really pushing the envelope"

Barbie with a Whip | Altered Barbie exhibition. Barbie turns 50 & turns it on!

My mother-in-law is in San Francisco at the end of a month long round the world trip. On gchat today she said she was off to the 'Altered Barbie' exhibition'. This was an invitation to Google I couldn't resist - and the results were fun.

Barbie is turning 50 this year and at 50 she is having a late mid life crisis and finding her real self (and her nipples) with the help of some artists who:

who reuse everything to make Barbie and Ken into recycled and re-usable art; including mixed-media, painting, printmaking, photography, quilts, fashion, poetry & 3D Barbie's, with video, performance and film! Over 100 artists showcase their eco-friendly ken and Barbie art.

and a little video that explains more about the 7th Annual Altered Barbie Exhibition.

Finally a response to one Australian boy's contribution to the space race.

I posted this a few weeks ago. I just happened across it on the the Lifeasdaddy blog. Some people commented on it as such a nice story but yesterday on ABC Radio's PM program there was a story on how the Woomera [top] rocket scientists have responsed to Denis Cox 52 years later.

There is a transcript of the story there or you can listen:
